John Juanda Wins WSOP Europe Main Event

October 14, 2008

After a grueling 22 hours of final table play professional team Full Tilt poker player John Juanda was able to best Stanislav Alekhin to claim the first place prize of £868,800. The heads up match was very intense that lasted 242 hands and the final hand came when Alekhin’s queen ten of diamonds ran into Juanda’s pocket aces. The entire final table took 484 hands and the 484th hand made Juanda the second WSOP Europe Main Event champion, following last year’s incredible performance by Annette Obrestad.

Other house hold names that made the final table include the likes of Ivan Demidov, Daniel Negreanu and Scott Fischman. However, Juanda didn’t let those players stand in his way of winning his fourth WSOP bracelet. His last World Series of Poker bracelet came in 2004 when he won the $2,500 Pot Limit Omaha re-buy tournament. After the win Juanda even commented about how long it has been since he won a bracelet. “It was so long ago when I won my last bracelet, I can’t remember. It’s embarrassing. Some people have to keep up with the Joneses. I have to keep up with the Iveys’ and Cunninghams’ and Negreanus’. I wondered if I would ever win again.”

What is also interesting to note is that Ivan Demidov also has made the final table of the World Series of Poker Main Event that is played out in Las Vegas. He is apart of the “November Nine”, which means that the final nine players will be played out on the 9th of November for the WSOP Main Event bracelet.

Here are the payouts of the WSOP Europe Main Event final table:

1st Place: John Juanda £868,800
2nd Place: Stanislav Alekhin £533,950
3rd Place: Ivan Demidov £334,850
