Poker Stars is well known throughout the poker community for its widely varied tournament fields and very impressive prize pools. Some of its most notable are its $11 buy in events. Last Sunday was no exception to the rule when its ’Sunday Two Hundred Grand’ tournament boasted 25,000 entrants and $25,000 going to the overall winner. For an $11 investment, that’s pretty decent odds.
But, Poker Stars has never been known for being happy with the status quo. With that in mind, on Sunday, December 28 at 3:30 p.m. ET, the site plans on going above and beyond itself and in record fashion.
PokerStars is offering a whopping $500,000 guarantee for an $11 tournament. It is claiming that it will be the largest cash tournament of all time when it comes to field size which is something few people can argue with. The site has taken the step of contacting Guinness in an attempt to have the achievement recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The site has decided to cap the total number of entrants allowed to play in the tournament at 35,000 so even they reach maximum capacity, Poker Stars will still add $150,000 to the prize pool to meet the guarantee.
As of December 17, over a week and a half prior to the event, almost 4,000 entrants have already registered. Though they’re only calling it an attempt at the world record, its hard to imagine the tournament not getting close to if not passing its capacity based on the site’s already established success not to mention all the additional money Poker Stars is chipping in.
The tournament is scheduled to have 20 minute levels with 10 players per table and each entrant will start out with 3,000 in chips. The overall winner can expect to take home an very nice payday of $30,000 and the top 8,750 players will place in the money.
