The World Poker Tour Southern Poker Championship kicks off today from the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. The first major poker series of the New Year is taking place from January 2 through January 17 and the schedule is packed with 15 poker tournaments and offering a little something for everyone. This will be the ninth consecutive year that the state of Mississippi has held a major poker festival and this event will be a continuation of two World Poker Tour events held in the past, The Gulf Coast Poker Championship held at the Beau Rivage and the World Poker Open held at sister property the Gold Strike in Tunica.
Ken Lambert, director of poker operations for the Beau Rivage said, “We’re going to be the center of the poker universe in what will be the first major poker tournament of 2009. Whatever poker games our players want to play for whatever limits, we are going to offer it at Beau Rivage. Ask anyone of the thousands of players who made us an annual destination and they will tell you the poker action here is perhaps the best in the world.”
Buy ins for the 15 tournaments start as low as $300 but entry into the main event will cost you $10,000. The main event will run from January 14-17 and is offering up an anticipated $1 million first place prize for the winner along with a gold and diamond bracelet and a $25,000 entry into the World Poker Tour World Championship at Bellagio in April 2009. This is the first time that the Southern Poker Championship will be offering a $5,000 buy in Pot Limit Omaha Championship.
Most events will be held over two days and there will be many opportunities to get in via satellite if you don’t want to buy in. There is also a nightly $175+$25 no limit hold’em tournament open to all players at 7pm.
