High Stakes Poker Season 5 Episode 5 Summary

Benyamine picks up the first pot of the night when he flops bottom two pair and bets Negreanu off his open ended straight draw. The next pot sees Eastgate limp with T8 suited Barry Greenstien raise to $5K with pocket kings, Tom Dwan raise to $18,200 with 9c 2c, Elezra tank with Jc Jd before eventually folding, Easgate bails out and Barry Greenstien repops it and wins the pot.

Elezra comments, Barry finally plays a hand after winning that big one 3.5 hours ago.

On the third hand of the night Barry picks up AsKs and raises to $4500, Ziigmund gets involved as does Daniel, both holding 98 off suit. The flop comes 2 6 K and Barry’s bet wins him his second consecutive uncontested pot.

The next hand Elezra limps with 32, Negreanu raises to $5600 with QK and durrrr calls with AJ. The flop comes J 8 2 and Durrrr bets $13,200. Negreanue for some unknown reason calls, Durrrr thinks for a bit and bets $34,000 and Negreanu finally folds.

The table is noticeable quiet at this point. We don’t get this information from the show but all these episodes were taped over a 3 day period from December 19-21, perhaps this episode was filmed late in the first day which would make sense based on Elezra’s “since winning that big pot 3.5 hours ago” comment.

All players still quiet, Negreanu raises to $3K with Tc9C, Durrrr calls with 8d 7c, and Elezra picks up AA and raises it $8K on top. Negreanu calls as does Durrrr. The flop comes Qc 2c 4h giving Negreanu a flush draw. Elezra bets $17,100, Negreanu raises to $44,100 and Elezra pops it $119,100. Daniel tanks for a while and goes all in for $236,300 and Elezra calls. They agree to run it twice. The first time it comes 5d 6s, and the second time 3s, Js and Elezra takes them both.

Daniel Negreanu is now by far the biggest loser on High Stakes Poker Season 5 having dropped about $400K.

The next hand Benyamine calls with Qc 9c, Elezra raises to $4500 with Ad 9d, Ziigmund calls with 44, Eastgate raises to $20K with queens and Brunson (who has $400K and has good implied odds to call) for some reason folds with pocket tens. Benyamine folds, Ziigmund and Elezra both call. The flop comes Kd 2d 7c giving Elezra the flush draw. Elezra bets $55,000 and Eastgate tanks for a bit and calls. The turn is 3c, Elezra checks and Eastgate checks. The river is Jc, Elezra checks and Eastgate shows the winner.

The next hand Ziigmund raises to $4K, Negreanu calls with 7’s. Eastgate raises to $20K with JJ, and Dwan raises to $58,700 with 44. Ziigmund folds, Negreanu folds, Eastgate calls. The flop comes AQ8, Eastgate checked, Durrrr bets $62,200 and Eastgate for the third time this season while in a big pot folds the best hand.

This hands followed with Greenstien opening for $2500 with 5’s, Ziigmund calling with Ac 7c, Negreanu calling with 6c 2c, Brunson calling with Kd 8d. The flop comes Qh 4c Jc which is a dangerous flop for Daniel Negreanu because a club on the turn would be fatal for him. It ends up being him and Ziigmund seeing the turn which is a Kh and Daniel luckily gets away from the hand when Ziigmund bets $26K.

Greenstein opens a second straight pot, this time raising to $3500 with Ace King. He gets called by Elezra and Ziigmund before Daniel Negreanu raises to $20K with Kh 9d. Greenstien reraises to $103,500 and everyone folds.

Greenstein opened a third straight pot, this with 6d 5d he raised to $3500. The flop came Jd, Kc, Ad and Barry Greenstein bet $7,000 Elezra raised to $18,000 with A2, and Greenstein called. The turn came 8c and Elezra bet $45,000 and after tanking for a bit Greenstein raises it to 200,000. Quite a play considering both players hands, Elezra looks totally shocked and mucks the hand. Intense poker in that hand.

Durrrr opens to $3800 with K9, Elezra calls with AQ, Ziigmund with K9 and Eastgate also with AQ. The flop came 2 9 3 rainbow and Durr bet $12K, Ziigmund called. The turn was 7d, Durrrr bet $28,700 and Ziigmund called. The river was an 8d, Durrrr tanked for a about ten seconds, checked and Ziigmund checked giving Durrrr the pot.

Elezra limped from the cut off with T9, Daniel did on the button with KhTh, and Brunson with J7 and T2 saw the flop. The flop came 4h Ah 3h giving Negreanu the flush. He bet $3500 and bad luck for Negreanu everyone folded.

On the last hand of night, Elezra opens for $3500 with Qc Tc, Ziigmund raises to $10K with AT, Durrrr called with 77, and Elezra called. The flop came 9 3 9, all three players checked. The turn was a 4, Dwan bet $22,600 and Ziigmund called. The river was a King and both checked. Durrrr once again takes the pot.

Overall the show was a bit duller than the previous episodes. As we mentioned perhaps this was filmed late on Day 1 and the players were getting tired. The highlight was Barry’s nice bluff/read and the big story was Negreanu tilting and getting himself stuck for quite a bit on the season.
